European Pain Federation

The European Pain Federation, formerly the European Federation of IASP Chapters (EFIC), is a multidisciplinary professional organisation in the field of pain research and medicine. It consists of the 37 chapters of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Established in 1993, the European Pain Federation constituent chapters represent pain societies from 37 European countries and close to 20,000 physicians, basic researchers, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, and other health-care professionals across Europe who are involved in pain management and pain research.

Aims

The European Pain Federation supports the aims of IASP -- to promote research, education, and the clinical management of pain.

The specific aim of the European Pain Federation is to create a forum for European collaboration on pain issues and to encourage communication at a European level between IASP chapters and with other bodies interested or involved in the fields of pain research and therapy. These include European societies or federations of medical specialties (anesthesiology, neurology, headache, palliative care, etc.), institutions of the European Community, and European and national educators and legislators.

Activities

The European Pain Federation focuses primarily on the three activities of education, research, and advocacy, with the aim of improving pain management and pain research.

In regard to education, the European Pain Federation organizes Pain Schools that bring together leading educators to provide study programs across Europe. The European Pain Federation has also developed curricula for medical schools and on pain medicine and pain physiotherapy, as well as accompanying examinations and qualifications. The Examination for the European Diploma in Pain Medicine (EDPM) was launched in 2017. The Examination for the European Diploma in Pain Physiotherapy (EDPP) will be launched  in 2018.

Concerning research, the European Pain Federation provides grants and fellowships for researchers. The European Pain Federation has also taken part in research consortia via programs funded by the European Commission, such as Horizon 2020 and the Innovative Medicines Initiative.

On advocacy, the European Pain Federation is a partner within the Societal Impact of Pain platform, along with the pharmaceutical company Grünenthal, the patients’ organization Pain Alliance Europe, and the citizens’ rights organization Active Citizenship Network. The Societal Impact of Pain platform aims to change policies affecting pain care by drawing attention to the consequences of untreated pain on patients, health-care systems, employment, and society.

The European Pain Federation takes part in the IASP Global Year Against Pain campaign, known in Europe as the European Year Against Pain.
