Chronic pain management is a major and growing challenge for patients, healthcare professionals and the global healthcare system. This certificate is an ongoing collaboration between the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy (SPOT) and the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain to provide healthcare professionals with the most recent and relevant approaches and technologies for the care and management of chronic pain.
An interdisciplinary approach is represented by the participants as well as by the educators of the certificate. By teaching evidence-based clinical practice with an interdisciplinary perspective, this graduate certificate will provide the professional with advanced knowledge and expertise in this challenging area of healthcare. This certificate is offered in French and in English.
- Qualification on completion: Graduate Certificate in Chronic Pain Management.
- Pre-requisite qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in a health-related discipline from a university or recognized institution. Transcript indicating academic scoring equivalent to a B average or a McGill CGPA of 3.0.

The program is appropriate for professionals from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacology, physical therapy, psychology, and related disciplines. - Format: Online
- Style: The program is highly interactive with individual, pair, and group learning activities. Students are presented new material on a weekly basis and guided through the material and activities by tutors with an expertise in chronic pain management. Throughout each course students complete case-based presentations, discussions, and reports requiring analysis and synthesis of material and building upon their clinical experience. This post-professional training program is designed for busy healthcare professionals, leaving them the freedom to better manage their work-life balance.
- Length: The program consists of 5 courses which may be completed between 1 and 2.5 years. Students have the option of choosing a fast track option. Each course is one academic semester (13 weeks); with 3 hours per week of formal instruction plus 3-5 hours per week for assignments, readings, and work-integrated learning activities.
- Content Consistent with any IASP curriculum: The McGill SPOT chronic pain management certificate content has been carefully designed to align with five major themes of chronic pain management: the multidimensional nature of chronic pain, assessment, intervention, conditions, and interdisciplinary. Each of these themes is a pillar to the learners’ expertise in the management of chronic pain to improve patient/client care. The program content addresses these themes individually or in parallel. McGill SPOT chronic pain management certificate themes align with the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Interprofessional Pain Curriculum Outline.
- Evaluation Format: Students in all courses are evaluated based on participation, case-based assignments, and literature reviews. In specific courses, learners will also be evaluated based on exams, presentations, and a practicum exercise.

Graduate Certificate in Pain Management Program
The aim of the Graduate Certificate in Pain Management Program is to provide advanced education in collaborative pain management for healthcare professionals. This certificate provides an opportunity for practicing clinicians to learn with- from- and about each other to address the multi-dimensional nature of both acute and chronic pain, with an emphasis on complex/chronic pain. Course contributors include leaders in pain research, management, and education.

The Ronald Melzack Fellowship in Pain Research, the Catherine Bushnell Fellowship in Pain Research, and the Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research all support full-time research that will be conducted at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain (AECRP) at McGill University, the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit (AEPMU) at McGill University Health Centre's Montreal General Hospital, or another Quebec Institution. Qualifying applicants will have completed a PhD, MD, or comparable degree and have an interest in a full-time position conducting basic or clinical research in chronic pain. The Fellowships have stipends commensurate with experience. Applicants must obtain an agreement for sponsorship from a full member of the AECRP. The Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research Fellowship
The Louise and Alan Edwards Foundation of Montreal requests applications for the Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research. The objective of this fellowship is to support a position encompassing both clinical pain research and clinical activities conducted at the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit of the McGill University Health Centre. This Fellowship is intended for health care professionals with an MD or PhD title who wish to pursue original clinical research in the field of Pain Medicine within the multidisciplinary team at the Pain Management Unit. Previous research experience is preferable but not mandatory.
The Fellowship has a stipend* commensurate with experience. Funding is for one or two years with the second year contingent upon mutual satisfaction. Should ethics approval be required, The Foundation requires that an application be submitted within 3 months of the start date. Acknowledgement of The Louise and Alan Edwards Foundation must be given in any and all publications or posters related to this Fellowship.
A synopsis of the research project is to be submitted to The Foundation at each year’s end. The Edwards PhD Studentships in Pain Research support full-time research conducted at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain (AECRP) at McGill University.
