Puerarin inhibits inflammation and oxidative stress in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mice model.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease accompanied by abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. The aim of this study was to investigate whether puerarin, one of the main components of the root of Pueraria lobata, exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects against UC. To examine the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects of puerarin against colitis, we used a mouse model of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Administration of puerarin alleviated colon shortening, pathological damage to the colon, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. Puerarin significantly inhibited inflammation through the down-regulation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators. Moreover, puerarin showed anti-oxidative effects through the regulation of the expression of the NF-E2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway and antioxidant enzymes. Puerarin inhibited intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction by increasing the expression of tight junction proteins. These results suggest that puerarin has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects in the mouse model of colitis.

Pseudotumor Cerebri Syndrome: From Childhood to Adulthood Risk Factors and Clinical Presentation.

Although considered uncommon, pseudotumor cerebri syndrome (PTC) is a significant cause of headache among children and adults. However, the presenting symptoms may be different among diverse age groups. In the present study, we compared the risk factors and clinical presentation of PTC across life-from childhood to adulthood.

What is the evidence for mirtazapine in treating cancer-related symptomatology? A systematic review.

Cancer patients often experience multiple distressing symptoms which are challenging to manage. It would therefore be helpful to find a treatment that alleviates more than one symptom, to avoid polypharmacy: mirtazapine has been used in several studies for this purpose. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of mirtazapine in alleviating one or more frequently encountered cancer-related symptoms.

Abdominal Pain and Anxious or Depressed State Are Independently Associated With Weight Loss in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Many factors impact nutritional status in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We undertook this study to evaluate the potential role that abdominal pain has on weight loss and dietary behavior in IBD.

Recombinant Herpes Zoster Vaccine (RZV) after Heart Transplantation: A Single Center Experience.

Herpes zoster (HZ) results from reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) presenting as a dermatomal rash. Diminished cellular immunity to VZV increases HZ risk and incidence in solid organ transplant (SOT) is higher than the general population. Immunogenicity and safety of the inactivated varicella vaccine (RZV, Shingrix) has been demonstrated in renal transplant (KT) but data in heart transplant (HT) are lacking.

Marijuana Use in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Understanding the Prevalence and the Potential Pitfalls.

Many patients with inflammatory bowel disease experiment with marijuana for symptom control. Marijuana may help reduce abdominal pain but does not control inflammatory bowel disease related inflammation. Patients should discuss their marijuana use with their providers and continue appropriate medications if considering marijuana.

Pain acceptance levels of patients with chronic pain.

This study was conducted with the aim of determining pain acceptance levels in patients with chronic pain attending an algology outpatients' department. The research was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The population of the study consisted of 97 patients with chronic pain who attended the Algology Outpatients' Department of the Health Implementation and Research Center of Bursa Uludağ University. A Patient Description Form and a Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ) were used to collect research data. The participants' mean sub-score for accomplishing activities by patients with chronic pain was found to be 31.10 ± 11.84, their mean sub-score for pain willingness was 36.65 ± 10.37, and their mean score for the total scale was 67.76 ± 18.30. A statistically significant difference was found between the participants' total score means and their sub-score means according to their education level and frequency of experiencing pain (P < .05), but no statistically significant difference was found according to such factors as age, profession, marital status, or medications used (P > .05).It was found that female sex was generally exposed to chronic pain, and factors such as age, marital status, and drug treatment did not differ in the rate of acceptance of chronic pain, and the rate of acceptance of pain in workers was higher, those with lower education level were lower. There is a need that new studies with larger sample groups regarding the factors affecting the acceptance of chronic pain.

172 A Phase 3, Multicenter Study to Assess the Long-Term Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy of Olanzapine/Samidorphan in Patients with Schizophrenia.

Background: ALKS 3831, a combination of olanzapine and samidorphan (OLZ/SAM), is in development for the treatment of schizophrenia and is intended to provide the antipsychotic efficacy of olanzapine while mitigating olanzapine-associated weight gain. We report the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of OLZ/SAM in patients with schizophrenia in a phase 3, 52-week, open-label extension study.

Colchicine therapy for deep vein thrombosis in a patient with vascular-type Behçet disease: A case report.

Behçet Disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory vasculitis with thrombogenicity and multisystem involvement. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremities is the most frequent manifestation of vascular involvement in BD. The causes of thrombosis vary widely and include congenital predisposition and acquired factors, but of all the thrombosis, the cause is rarely BD. Furthermore, there are few reports of treatment for thrombosis in BD.

[Dermatomyositis presenting with low back pain].

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare connective tissue disease characterized by skin lesions and inflammatory changes observed in muscle biopsy findings. A definitive diagnosis of DM requires a characteristic rash in addition to proximal muscle weakness and muscle enzyme level elevation. DM is twice as common in women as men, with an age of onset of approximately 50 years. This case report describes a 29-year-old patient with low back pain and proximal muscle weakness in the legs diagnosed as lumbar disc herniation who was then referred by the neurosurgery department to our clinic. A physical examination revealed the characteristic skin lesions for dermatomyositis. Needle electromyography and a skin biopsy were performed, and corticosteroid treatment was initiated. In misdiagnosed patients, fatty infiltration in the muscles may cause irreversible weakness and gait disturbance. Early suppression of inflammation is important and can yield a dramatic response to treatment.
