The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is seeking applications from members, including those in early/mid-career stages and from people with lived experience of pain, to join the newly instituted IASP Ethical Review Board (ERB). The ERB will play a crucial role in advising the IASP leadership on matters relating to the ethical and reputational integrity of the Association. In particular, the ERB will review external donations, grants, sponsorship, and other income to ensure that best practice and ethical standards are met.

Volunteer Description and Responsibilities:
As a member of the IASP Ethical Review Board, you will contribute to the ethical evaluation of external financial support, helping to uphold IASP’s commitment to best ethical practices in pain research, education, and clinical practice. The board’s responsibilities include:
- Reviewing external donations, grants, sponsorship, and similar financial support above a predetermined threshold value.
- Assessing the ethical acceptability of funding terms and their alignment with IASP’s mission.
- Evaluating potential risks of reputational damage to IASP through associations with funders.
- Providing advisory ethical support to IASP leadership and staff as requested.
- Conducting an annual review of IASP’s Institutional Declaration of Interests.
- Preparing and submitting an annual report of the Ethical Review Board’s activities to the IASP Council.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong commitment to ethical principles and best practices.
- A background in fields related to pain research, education, or clinical practice.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
- Experience in managing relationships between professional organizations and the healthcare industries.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team.
- Strong communication and writing skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Experience in ethical review processes is preferred but not mandatory.
- Ability to meet 4 to 5 times per year via web conference. Meetings will be 1-2 hours except where there are special reasons.
