Minimally Invasive Skin Transcriptome Extraction Using a Dermal Biomarker Patch.

Advances in the scientific understanding of the skin and characteristic genomic dermal signatures continue to develop rapidly. Nonetheless, skin diagnosis remains predicated on a subjective visual examination, frequently followed by biopsy and histology. These procedures often are not sufficiently sensitive, and in the case of many inflammatory diseases, biopsies are not justified, creating a situation where high-quality samples can be difficult to obtain. The wealth of molecular information available and the pace at which new data are acquired suggest that methods for minimally invasive biomarker collection could dramatically alter our understanding of skin disease and positively impact treatment paradigms.

Post-COVID-19 fatigue: the contribution of cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Fatigue in its many forms of physical, mental, and psychosocial exhaustion is a common symptom of post-COVID-19 condition, also known as "Long COVID." Persistent fatigue in COVID-19 patients is frequently accompanied by cognitive dysfunction and neuropsychiatric symptoms; however, less is known about the relationships between these components of post-COVID-19 condition and fatigue itself. Consequently, the present study sought to (1) distinguish the types of fatigue experienced by participants, and (2) investigate whether cognitive deficits across various domains and neuropsychiatric conditions predicted these different types of fatigue. The study included 136 COVID-19 patients referred for neuropsychological evaluation due to cognitive complaints 8 months on average after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Measures included self-reported fatigue (physical, cognitive, and psychosocial), neuropsychiatric questionnaires (assessing symptoms of depression, anxiety, apathy, and executive functioning), a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and self-reported quality of life and everyday functioning. Results showed that reports of clinical significant fatigue were pervasive in our sample (82.3% of participants), with physical fatigue rated highest on average relative to the subscale maximum. Elevated levels of apathy, anxiety, and executive dysfunction in neuropsychiatric measures along with executive and attentional difficulties on cognitive tests were found to be consistently important predictors among different types of fatigue. This implicates both cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms as predictors of fatigue in post-COVID-19 condition, and stresses the importance of a holistic approach in assessing and considering potential treatment for COVID-19 patients experiencing fatigue.

Diagnostics and treatment of complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the pediatric surgery department. An analysis based on seven clinical cases and literature review.

<b> Introduction:</b> Pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome – temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) is a new disease, the first cases of which were observed in the spring of 2020. It affects children who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) and children who have been in direct contact with patients suffering from COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019). The disease is characterized by a wide spectrum of symptoms and the development of generalized inflammation of different organs and systems. One of the numerous symptoms may be severe abdominal pain. </br></br> <b>Aim:</b> The aim of this study was to review the available literature and analyze the results of patients treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Traumatology and Urology in Poznań in whom PIMS-TS imitated acute surgical abdominal disease. </br></br> <b>Materials and methods:</b> material for the study was collected on the basis of medical records of patients treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Traumatology and Urology of the Poznań University of Medical Sciences in the period between March 2020 and February 2021. </br></br> <b>Results:</b> TDuring this period, seven patients met the PIMS-TS criteria and three children were qualified for surgical treatment. Only one patient had an acute surgical cause of abdominal pain. </br></br> <b>Discussions:</b> The guidelines of the expert group at the Polish Pediatric Society and the National Consultant in the field of Pediatrics indicate the need to exclude acute surgical abdominal disease as a criterion for the diagnosis of PIMS-TS syndrome. In patients with acute abdominal pain, imaging and laboratory tests are sometimes diagnostically inconclusive, therefore exploratory laparoscopy is worth considering in order to differentiate PIMS-TS from acute surgical abdominal disease.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is characterized by intestinal and extra intestinal symptoms associated with the consumption of gluten-containing food. Since biomarkers for non-celiac gluten sensitivity are lacking, its prevalence is estimated based on self-reported symptoms. However, no data exist on self-reported non-celiac gluten sensitivity in the Korean population. Unilateral hyper-translucent lung: a rare case report of bronchial atresia.

A young female patient with chronic left side chest pain warranted a work-up. Chest X-ray suggested left hyper-translucency. High resolution computed tomography scan revealed left atretic apicoposterior segmental bronchus with an area of hyper-translucency suggestive of bronchial atresia. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy findings were normal. Spirometry showed moderate restriction with mild obstruction. It is a rare developmental anomaly characterised by interruption of normal bronchial continuity. Most commonly, it involves the apicoposterior segmental bronchus of left upper lobe as seen in our case. Since it is a benign condition, surgical treatment or any aggressive method of treatment is not required. However, intervention may be required in case of life threatening complications.
