The analgesic contribution of external oblique intercostal block: Case reports of 3 different surgeries and 3 spectacular effects.

Abdominal wall blocks are frequently used due to the use of effective blocks, such as the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block and the widespread use of ultrasound (US) imaging. A good knowledge of abdominal innervation is required for the use of abdominal wall blocks. We describe the extraordinary performance of external oblique intercostal (EOI) blocks in 3 different surgeries.

Acute abdomen following axial torsion of a Giant Meckel’s diverticulum in a young male: A case report.

Among Meckel's diverticulum (MD), the 'Giant' category is relatively rare. Most Giant MDs lead to complications such as torsion and diverticulitis.

Lateral ventricle pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma concurrent with Dandy-Walker complex: A case report.

Dandy-Walker complex and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas are both rare disease entities that typically manifest early in life and are associated with congenital etiological factors. Dandy-Walker complex is a cerebellar malformation associated with a series of anatomical changes. The disease onset is usually at birth or during infancy. Late onset in adulthood is uncommon. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is a rare WHO grade II astrocytic tumor affecting mainly young adults. Concomitant occurrence of Dandy-Walker complex and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma has not been previously reported.

A missed giant rhinolith retained for a decade in a paediatric patient at a zonal referral hospital in Central Tanzania: Case report and literature review.

Rhinolith is an entity formed by gradual deposition and coating of different salts of calcium and magnesium over an endogenous or exogenous nidus in the nasal cavity. The type, size and duration of the rhinolith lead to multiple types of presentation. Giant rhinoliths are very rare in paediatric patients owing the size of their nasal cavities. To the best of our knowledge this is the first reported case of a giant paediatric rhinolith in Tanzania.

Sclerosing mesenteritis due to Mycobacterium genavense infection: A case report.

Since its first identification in the early 1990s, Mycobacterium genavense has been considered and opportunistic pathogen. It mainly causes gastrointestinal symptoms, but also disseminated infections in severely immunosuppressed patients. Sclerosing mesenteritis is a long-term complication with high morbidity and mortality. As it is a rare condition, there are no specific guidelines for its management. We report a challenging case of persistent M. genavense infection, and propose surgery as an alternative treatment strategy.

Protease inhibitor from Libidibia ferrea seeds attenuates inflammatory and nociceptive responses in mice.

Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex. Tul.) L.P. Queiroz is a Brazilian native tree locally known as jucá and pau-ferro, and it has been used in folk medicine for relieving, asthma, bronchitis, sore throat, rheumatism, enterocolitis and fever. The anti-inflammatory properties of L. ferrea were confirmed for its stem, fruit, leaves, bark and seeds extracts, however little is known about the natural compounds that may be associated with that response.

Effectiveness of new selenium-enriched mutated probiotics in reducing inflammatory effects of piroxicam medication in liver and kidney.

Piroxicam is used to treat the pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but it has many side effects, such as hypertension, elevation of liver enzymes, and hepatitis. This study used selenium-enriched probiotics to reduce the side effects of piroxicam on the liver and kidney tissues and functions. Forty-eight male albino mice were randomly assigned to control, piroxicam (P), piroxicam plus selenium-enriched Lactobacillus plantarum PSe40/60/1 (P + SP), piroxicam plus selenium-enriched Bifidobacterium longum BSe50/20/1 (P + SB), selenium-enriched L. plantarum PSe40/60/1 (SP), and selenium-enriched B. longum BSe50/20/1 (SB) groups. In this study, the function of the liver and kidney was biochemically determined; the histopathology of the liver and kidney tissues was microscopically examined and the expression of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes in liver and kidney tissues was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Liver and kidney functions were significantly reduced in the piroxicam group compared with control. Liver and kidney tissues were damaged in the piroxicam group while they appeared more or less normal in the SB group. The expression of inflammatory genes was significantly up-regulated in the liver and kidney tissues of the piroxicam group compared to the control group. The expression of anti-inflammatory genes was significantly down-regulated in the liver and kidney of the piroxicam group and up-regulated in the liver and kidney of the SB group compared to the control group. Therefore, these mutated strains of probiotics were useful in reducing the side effects of the piroxicam drug on the liver and kidney.

Predictors of unrelieved symptoms in All of Us Research Program participants with chronic conditions.

Over half of American adults are diagnosed with a chronic condition, with an increasing prevalence being diagnosed with multiple chronic conditions. These adults are at higher risk for having unrelieved, co-occurring symptoms, known as symptom clusters.
