Mobilizing Evidence-Based Online Treatment during COVID-19: The Development and Deployment of the Virtual Comfort Ability Program for Pediatric Pain

Dr. Coakley will be talking about the development and dissemination of the Virtual Comfort Ability Program (V-CAP). The Comfort Ability Program (CAP) is an internationally disseminated, brief CBT-based workshop for adolescents with chronic pain and their parents. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, CAP underwent an accelerated virtual modification following the knowledge-to-action translational science framework, resulting in a telehealth intervention that to date has been successfully adopted by 12 children's hospitals in the US, Canada, and Australia. This rapid modification has helped hundreds of families to obtain essential pain management skills training during the pandemic when access to care has been limited.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the knowledge-to-action cycle that guided the development of the Comfort Ability virtual intervention.
  • List key challenges and considerations that must be overcome when designing virtual interventions for pediatric patients
  • Obtain access to patient and provider resources to support patients and families with chronic pain
