2010
Thirteenth World Congress on Pain – Montreal and Montreal Declaration
In 2010, IASP held the thirteenth World Congress on Pain in Montreal, Canada. This was the first time IASP utilized digital technology to support the meeting and the only time that IASP returned to a city where it had held a congress previously (1976).
Immediately after the World Congress, IASP hosted 280 Delegates from 68 countries in an International Summit on Pain. This Summit produced the Declaration of Montreal, proclaiming access to pain management to be a fundamental human right.
2011
First Latin American Pain Fellowship Awarded
In 2011, the first Latin American Pain Fellowship was awarded to Sandra Rodriguez from Ecuador with support from the IASP Colombia Chapter. This fellowship provided young doctors from Latin America with training in pain management. Sandra is now the head of a pain unit at a hospital near Guayaquil, was a teacher in last year’s Pain Camp, and is currently a member of the council of the Ecuadorian chapter. Fourteenth World Congress on Pain – Milan
In 2012, IASP held the fourteenth World Congress on Pain in Milan. It was well attended, attracting 5,852 delegates and 618 exhibitors. During this World Congress on Pain, attendees were surveyed on ways to improve the meeting. The overarching feedback was the desire to use less paper for information. This led to an increase in the use of technology at subsequent World Congresses.

IASP Moves to Washington, DC
In 2013, IASP moved its headquarters from Seattle, where it began under John Bonica, to its current office in Washington, DC.
2014
First Latin America Pain Camp
In 2014, IASP held the first Pain Camp in Latin America. Pain Camps are inter-professional residential educational events aimed at promoting interdisciplinary pain management by improving the knowledge and skills of young healthcare professionals in low-and-middle-income countries.

Fifteenth World Congress on Pain - Buenos Aires

Sixteenth World Congress on Pain – Yokohama
In 2016, IASP held the 16th World Congress on Pain in Yokohama, Japan. This was the first World Congress on Pain in Asia and was attended by 4,400 delegates. Based on feedback from previous World Congresses, the Yokohama Congress introduced the first mobile app to communicate and share information with attendees. 2016
First Issue of PAIN Reports
In July 2016, the first issue of PAIN Reports was published. This open-access IASP journal was created to publish all new and relevant pain research with a focus on providing access to research in developing areas without excessive financial barriers. PAIN Reports publishes full-length articles, brief reports, reviews, meta-analyses, meeting proceedings, and selected case reports while giving special attention to submissions of enterprising and high-risk research, pilot studies, and clinical guidelines from developing countries.

Revised IASP Pain Curriculum Outlines Published
In 2017, nine pain curriculum guidelines for professionals were revised by the IASP Educational Initiatives Working Group under the leadership of Deb Gordon. IASP encourages the use of these curricula for adoption in medical and health professional education as well as for research purposes. The following year, the American Physical Therapy Association voted to endorse and promote the integration of the IASP pain curriculum guidelines for physical therapy programs across the United States.

First Pain Camp in India
In 2017, IASP and the Indian Society for the Study of Pain conducted the IASP-ISSP Multidisciplinary Evidence-Based Pain Management Program for clinicians in India. Former IASP Secretary Raj Raja, former Councilor Sushma Bhatnagar, and Preeti Doshi, former President of the Indian Society for the Study of Pain, were instrumental in the success of these Pain Camps.

First North American Pain School (NAPS)
In 2017, IASP held the first North American Pain School (NAPS). NAPS was developed under the leadership of Jeff Mogil. NAPS programs have been held yearly in Canada since 2017 and have been hugely successful in training early-career pain researchers.

IASP Launches Pain Research Forum and RELIEF
In 2017, IASP launched the Pain Research Forum (PRF) and RELIEF. These online publications greatly extended IASP’s global community and supported the strategic aim of hosting a distribution hub for pain science and treatment. PRF has since expanded its mission, including the addition of a Correspondents Program, training young pain investigators to communicate science to a lay audience.

Consensus Statement on Use of Brain Imaging Tests for Chronic Pain
In 2017, an IASP Presidential Task Force, chaired by Karen Davis, published a consensus statement on the capabilities of brain imaging in the diagnosis of chronic pain and the ethical and legal implications of its use. The task force emphasized that the use of brain imaging in this context is in a discovery phase and proposed standards of evidence that must be satisfied before brain imaging measures can be considered suitable for clinical or legal purposes.

Tool Kit for Multidisciplinary Pain Clinics in Southeast Asia Initiative Launched
In 2017, with funding obtained from Pfizer’s Independent Grants for Learning and Change, IASP developed a training course and manual for establishing multidisciplinary pain centers in Southeast Asia, initially targeting Myanmar, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The project was managed by a multidisciplinary group of IASP members from the region under the leadership of Mary Cardosa.

Seventeenth World Congress on Pain - Boston
In 2018, IASP held the seventeenth World Congress on Pain in Boston, United States, where we hosted 4,626 attendees. Opioids for Pain Management IASP Position Statement
In 2018, the IASP Task Force on Opioids, convened by IASP President Judith Turner and chaired by Jane Ballantyne, published a position statement regarding the use of opioids for pain management. IASP strongly advocates access to opioids for the humane treatment of severe short-lived pain while using reasonable precautions to avoid misuse but recommends caution when prescribing opioids for chronic pain.
2019
WHO Adopts ICD-11 Pain Classification System Developed by IASP
In 2019, the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) was approved. This revision includes a new classification of chronic pain developed by an IASP task force led by Rolf-Detlef Treede and Winfried Rief. Prior to this revision, diagnoses for chronic pain were not categorized systematically or based on actual epidemiology. The new classification was designed to be useful in primary and specialized pain care settings.

Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy (GAPPA) Created
In 2019, IASP President, Lars Arendt-Nielsen, established the Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy (GAPPA) Task Force. GAPPA creates partnerships between people with the lived experience of pain, patient advocates, researchers, and clinicians around the world to advance the study, understanding, and treatment of pain.

IASP Launches PERC
In 2019, IASP launched the Pain Education Research Center (PERC) to provide a digital, on-demand platform of educational resources, including World Congress lecture recordings and webinars.
