The Pain Research Center at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH, Bethesda, Maryland campus) is accepting applications for a highly motivated full-time sensory research technician.

The technician will have the opportunity to participate in several aspects of collaborative research studies across the NIH related to somatosensation and pain. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct and perform data analysis of pain-related neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI, EEG, fNIRS), autonomic assessments, and psychophysical and pain-related tests on patients and healthy volunteers.
  • Work with investigators from multiple institutes and centers to design sensory, autonomic, and imaging testing procedures to best characterize pain conditions associated with individual conditions, treatments, and diseases.
  • Participate in writing clinical protocols to study pain mechanisms and interventions, and scientific papers and conference abstracts.

Experience in at least one of the following programming languages is preferred but not required: MATLAB or python.

Previous experience in any of the following techniques is preferred: MRI/fMRI, fNIRS, EEG, PET, TMS, psychophysical testing.

Experience with the following methods or systems is also preferred: human behavioral, sensory, and autonomic testing including equipment usage (e.g., Medoc Pathways/TSA, QSTLab, Biopac, E-Prime, PsychoPy, Eyelink, tVNS, Digitimer, laser Doppler imaging) and neuroimaging programs, including FSL, SPM, and/or AFNI.

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., neuroscience, psychology, biology) is required, and a master’s is preferred but not required.
