Five early-career pain researchers participated in the PRF-NAPS Correspondents program during the 2024 North American Pain School, which took place 23-28 June in Montebello, Québec City, Canada. The Correspondents program is a unique science communication training program that provides participants with knowledge and skills needed to communicate science effectively to a wide range of pain researchers, patients, and the greater public.
In this episode of the IASP-PRF Podcast, PRF Correspondent Marimée Godbout-Parent spoke with Melanie Noel – a child health and wellness researcher specializing in psychological mechanisms involved in pediatric pain. During their wide-ranging conversation, Noel discussed the inspiration behind her pioneering pediatric pain research, the development of her mentorship style based on her own mentors, and leading the way for other women in pain research.

Melanie Noel, PhD, is an Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Noel is a prolific pain researcher who has authored more than 215 original, peer-reviewed articles addressing pediatric acute and chronic pain as well as mental health, trauma, narrative, and memory. She is also committed to applying a developmental framework to her research and examining the broader sociocultural influences that are unique to pain in childhood.
