The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) as part of the NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term®) Initiative has published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to speed the development and implementation of scientific solutions to the national opioid public health crisis. The Program is called the “HEAL Initiative: Pain Research Enhancement Program (“PREP”) (R15 Clinical Trial Optional)” and can be found at the following link: RFA-AT-25-001. The first receipt date for this program is November 19, 2024.
The purpose of HEAL PREP is to:
- Support basic and mechanistic pain research from R15-eligible undergraduate-focused institutions, health professional schools or graduate schools.
- Promote integrated, interdisciplinary research partnerships between Principal Investigators (PIs) from R15-eligible institutions and investigators from other U.S. domestic institutions.
- Enhance the pain research environment at the R15-eligible institution for health professional students, undergraduate and/or graduate students through active engagement in pain research.
Importantly, this program is open to either Undergraduate-focused Institutions or Health Professional/ Graduate Schools who meet the R15 eligibility criteria. Applications will propose a research partnership with at least one partnering institution, which does not need to be R15-eligible. We strongly encourage interested investigators to use the NIH RePORTER system to identify potential collaborators.
Further details about this funding opportunity can be found directly in the NIH Guide: RFA-AT-25-001 and a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document is also available.
