50th Ann Fallback

Assistant Professor, tenure-track – (210001S1)

The Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science (PTSS) at the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to join our vibrant and collaborative group of NIH-funded pain and symptom scientists who apply cutting edge methods in basic, translational, and clinical programs of research. We seek an outstanding scientist with high energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for developing a robust, independently funded program of research that aligns with our scientific interests. While we welcome applicants with a broad range of skills, our preference areas include those with expertise and training in clinical and/or basic pain mechanisms, pain-related health disparities research and/or translational drug development (e.g., from identification of novel therapeutic targets through in vivo testing of small molecule mimetics) in animal and/or human pain models.
Faculty, staff, and trainees in the PTSS department are also invited to join the interdisciplinary campus-wide Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research (CACPR), co-led by Drs. Susan G. Dorsey and Man-Kyo Chung. The CACPR offers the successful candidate the opportunity to collaborate with pain and symptom science researchers from the schools of Nursing, Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Law and Social Work, with interests spanning from the molecular and cellular approaches through community engagement and legal issues surrounding pain management practices. The CACPR hosts bi-weekly pain interest group seminars and an annual symposium on a variety of chronic pain topics.
The UMSON is part of the University of Maryland graduate professional campus in Baltimore, Maryland, which also includes the schools of medicine, dentistry, social work, pharmacy, and law, and is one of the fastest growing biomedical research centers in the nation. The unique composition of the campus enables health professionals to address clinical care, public policy and social issues through inter-professional research, scholarship, teaching and community action. Its location in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C.-Annapolis triangle maximizes opportunities for collaboration with government agencies, health care institutions and life sciences industries.
Candidates for this position should hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent in neuroscience, nursing, biology or a related field, have a strong motivation to develop an independent research career, and an excellent dissemination record (oral and written). Two years of post-doctoral fellowship experience is highly preferred.

UMB requires all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.

Primary responsibilities:
• Research interests aligned with PTSS departmental scientific areas of excellence with a preference for expertise and training in clinical and/or basic pain mechanisms, pain-related health disparities research or drug development in animal and/or human pain models.
• Substantively contribute to the research and scholarship efforts of the PTSS department and the CACPR through the growth of a program of extramurally funded research and via dissemination of high-impact, peer-reviewed, data-based publications.
• Mentor PhD students.
• Actively participate in the tripartite mission of the school.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD) required.
• Evidence of scholarly achievement in terms of data-based publications, extramural funding for pre- and post-doctoral research training, and regional or national research presentations.
• Post-doctoral research experience highly preferred.
Interested candidates should attach a single PDF document containing a cover letter with a research statement, CV, personal statement describing research interests and career goals, and contact information for three references to Susan G. Dorsey, PhD (sdorsey@umaryland.edu) or Luana Colloca, MD, PhD (colloca@umaryland.edu). Please also feel free to contact either of us with questions.
