It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Dr. Michael Cousins, MD, DSc, FRCA FANZCA FFPMANZCA FAChPM (RACP) on April 27, 2024. Dr. Cousins was a pioneering figure in the field of pain management, both nationally and internationally, dedicating his life to alleviating suffering and advancing the treatment of pain.
A distinguished leader, Dr. Cousins served as the founding president of the Australian Pain Society and as President of IASP from 1987 to 1990. His contributions to the field were recognized with the prestigious Member of the Order of Australia award in 1995, honoring his exceptional service to medicine, particularly in pain management and anesthesia. From 1999-2002 he was the founding Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), and in 2010 he led the establishment of the world’s first National Pain Strategy which has expanded awareness of pain as a national problem in Australia, as well as the promotion of pain education, research, and pain services.
Dr. Cousins was instrumental in fostering collaboration between IASP and the World Health Organization (WHO), advocating tirelessly for the recognition of pain management as a fundamental human right. His visionary leadership culminated in the development of the IASP “Declaration of Montreal,” a landmark statement affirming the importance of equitable access to pain management for all individuals.
His passing leaves an indelible mark on the pain community in Australia and worldwide. Dr. Cousins will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those living with pain. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dr. Cousins’ family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration during this difficult time.
