Headache Because of Problems with Teeth, Mouth, Jaws, or Dentures in Chronic Temporomandibular Disorder Patients: A Case-Control Study.

This study aimed to characterize self-reported headaches because of problems with the teeth, mouth, jaws, or dentures (HATMJD) in chronic patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in order to compare their results with those of TMD patients without such headaches and to investigate the associations of HATMJD with depression, anxiety, physical symptoms, oral behaviors, and sleep quality. We conducted a case-control study on consecutive chronic TMD patients referred to the University Medical Center of Ljubljana, Slovenia. A self-reported HATMJD was extracted from item #12 in the 49-item version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire. Axis II instruments of the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (i.e., for screening of depression, anxiety, specific comorbid functional disorders, and oral behaviors) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used in this study. In total, 177 TMD patients (77.4% women; mean age: 36.3 years) participated in this study; 109 (61.6%) patients were classified as TMD patients with HATMJD. TMD patients with at least mild depressive and anxiety symptoms, with at least low somatic symptom severity, and a high number of parafunctional behaviors had more HATMJD. Parafunctional behavior and sleep quality were the most prominent predictive factors of the occurrence of HATMJD. TMD patients with HATMJD have more psychosocial dysfunction, a higher frequency of oral behaviors, and poorer sleep quality than TMD patients without such headaches.

NSAID-Based Coordination Compounds for Biomedical Applications: Recent Advances and Developments.

After the serendipitous discovery of cisplatin, a platinum-based drug with chemotherapeutic effects, an incredible amount of research in the area of coordination chemistry has been produced. Other transition metal compounds were studied, and several new relevant metallodrugs have been synthetized in the past few years. This review is focused on coordination compounds with first-row transition metals, namely, copper, cobalt, nickel or manganese, or with zinc, which have potential or effective pharmacological properties. It is known that metal complexes, once bound to organic drugs, can enhance the drugs' biological activities, such as anticancer, antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory ones. NSAIDs are a class of compounds with anti-inflammatory properties used to treat pain or fever. NSAIDs' properties can be strongly improved when included in complexes using their compositional N and O donor atoms, which facilitate their coordination to metal ions. This review focuses on the research on this topic and on the promising or effective results that complexes of first-row transition metals and NSAIDs can exhibit.

Reactive Oxygen Species Cause Exercise-Induced Angina in a Myocardial Ischaemia-Reperfusion Injury Model.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) effectively treats obstructive coronary artery syndrome. However, 30-40% patients continue to have angina after a successful PCI, thereby reducing patient satisfaction. The mechanisms underlying persistent angina after revascularisation therapy are still poorly understood; hence, the treatment or guideline for post-PCI angina remains unestablished. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying effort angina in animals following myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK), a marker for painful stimulation-induced neuronal activation, was used for the investigation. After a forced treadmill exercise (FTE), the number of p-ERK-expressing neurons increased in the superficial dorsal horn of the I/R model animals. Moreover, FTE evoked hydrogen peroxide (HO) production in the I/R-injured heart, inducing angina through TRPA1 activation on cardiac sensory fibres. Notably, the treatment of a TEMPOL, a reactive oxygen species scavenger, or TRPA1 mice successfully alleviated the FTE-induced p-ERK expression in the dorsal horn. The production of HO, a reactive oxygen species, through physical exercise contributes to angina development following I/R. Hence, our findings may be useful for understanding and treating angina following revascularisation therapy.

Beneficial Effects of the Very-Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet on the Symptoms of Male Accessory Gland Inflammation.

Obesity exposes individuals to the risk of chronic inflammation of the prostate gland. A longitudinal clinical study was conducted on selected overweight/obese patients with male accessory gland inflammation (MAGI) to evaluate the effects of body weight loss on their urogenital symptoms. One hundred patients were selected and assigned to two groups undergoing two different nutritional programs. The first group ( = 50) started a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the second ( = 50) a very-low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD). Before and after three months on the diet, each patient was evaluated for body weight, waist circumference, and MAGI symptoms. The MAGI was assessed using the Structured Interview about MAGI (SI-MAGI), a questionnaire previously designed to assess the symptoms of MAGI. The questionnaire explores four domains, including urinary symptoms, ejaculatory pain or discomfort, sexual dysfunction, and impaired quality of life. Finally, in the two groups, the frequency of an α-blocker used to treat urinary tract symptoms was also evaluated. Patients on MedDiet experienced significant amelioration in urinary symptoms and quality of life. Patients under VLCKD reported not only significant improvement of the same parameters, but also in ejaculatory pain/discomfort and sexual dysfunction. Finally, the percentage of patients on VLCKD taking the α-blocker decreased significantly. Moreover, patients under VLCKD showed a greater loss of body weight than those following the MedDiet. The results of this study support the effectiveness of VLCKD in improving the symptoms of patients with MAGI. This improvement involved all of the domains of the SI-MAGI questionnaire and became manifest in a relatively short time. We suggest that a ketogenic nutritional approach can be used in overweight/obese patients with MAGI.
