The scientific evidence highlights the difficulties that healthcare professionals experience when managing patients with chronic pain. One of the causes of this difficulty could be related to the acquired training and the lack of knowledge about the neurophysiology of pain. In the present study, we assessed the effectiveness of a gamified web platform in acquiring knowledge about pain neurophysiology and determining the satisfaction and motivation of students of the Degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Lleida.

Effectiveness of adjunctive treatment combined with exercise therapy for patellofemoral pain: a protocol for a systematic review with network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a chronic condition that affects up to 25% of the general population and has a negative impact on functionality and quality of life due to the high levels of pain experienced by these patients. In order to improve pain and function, rehabilitation programmes that combine adjunctive treatments with exercise therapy are often used in research and clinical settings. However, despite the variety of adjunctive treatments available, their effectiveness when compared with exercise therapy has yet to be elucidated. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of adjunctive treatments plus exercise therapy versus exercise therapy, and determine the relative efficacy of different types of adjunctive treatments plus exercise therapy for individuals with PFP.

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are neoplasms associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia. Patients typically present with pathologic fractures in the setting of chronic hypophosphatemic hyperphosphaturic osteomalacia, as well as gradual muscle weakness, bone pain, and difficulty walking. Because of their rarity and nonspecific symptomatology, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often go undiagnosed for years. Even when discovered on imaging, the tumors can be diagnostically challenging for radiologists. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors often tend to be small and can be located nearly anywhere in the body, and, therefore, can mimic many other tumors. This case highlights the imaging and pathologic markers of a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, often found in a patient with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Stereotactic electroencephalography is associated with reduced opioid and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use when compared with subdural grids: a pediatric case series.

Patients undergoing surgical intervention for epilepsy mapping are typically administered opioids for pain control. The use of opioids is demonstrably lower after other procedures when a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) technique is used. Our objective was to determine whether using MIS for stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) resulted in lower opioid requirement by pediatric patients when compared with subdural grid placement after craniotomy (ECoG). A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients < 18 years who underwent epilepsy mapping surgery using SEEG or ECoG in 2015-2019. The hospital stay was divided into four time periods, and the total amounts of opioids (converted into morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs)) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and pain scores (on numerical rating scale (NRS)) were calculated for each time interval. The two groups were then compared statistically. The study included 31 patients in the SEEG group and 9 in the ECoG group. The SEEG group consumed significantly fewer opioids during the hospital stay than the ECoG group (23.6 vs. 61.7 MMEs; p = 0.041). There were also significant differences in the length of stay (6.9 vs. 12.2 days; p = 0.002), rate of complications (0% vs. 20%; p = 0.006), and total NSAIDs consumed (3,264.8 vs. 12,730.2 mg; p = 0.002). Opioid and NSAID consumption were significantly lower and hospital stays were shorter in pediatric patients who underwent epilepsy mapping via SEEG compared with ECoG. These results suggest that MIS for epilepsy mapping may decrease the overall pain medication use and expedite patient discharge.

The Symptom Monitoring with Feedback Trial (SWIFT): protocol for a registry-based cluster randomised controlled trial in haemodialysis.

Kidney failure prevalence is increasing worldwide. Haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplantation are undertaken to extend life with kidney failure. People receiving haemodialysis commonly experience fatigue, pain, nausea, cramping, itching, sleeping difficulties, anxiety and depression. This symptom burden contributes to poor health-related quality of life (QOL) and is a major reason for treatment withdrawal and death. The Symptom monitoring WIth Feedback Trial (SWIFT) will test the hypothesis that regular symptom monitoring with feedback to people receiving haemodialysis and their treating clinical team can improve QOL.
