Systemic photosensitivity due to pregabalin.

Pregabalin is a drug that belongs, along with others such as gabapentin, to the group of "new antiepileptic drugs", similar chemicals to the inhibitors of the gamma aminobutyric acid neurotransmitters. It is currently approved for other indications, such as the treatment of neuropathic pain or chronic itching. A case of systemic photosensitivity due to pregabalin is reported below.

Cannabinoids Improve Gastrointestinal Symptoms in a Parenteral Nutrition-Dependent Patient With Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction.

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a rare and challenging cause of pediatric intestinal failure, requiring long-term parenteral nutrition in most cases. Despite optimal management, some patients experience chronic abdominal pain and recurrent obstructive episodes with a major impact on their quality of life. Cannabinoids have been successfully used in some conditions. However, their use in CIPO has never been reported in the literature. We report a case of successful use of medicinal cannabinoids in a patient with CIPO, resulting in a significant reduction of abdominal pain, vomiting, and subocclusive episodes and increased appetite and weight, without major adverse events. Although further observations are required to consolidate these findings, this case may be helpful for other patients suffering from the same condition.

Fascia and soft tissues innervation in the human hip and their possible role in post-surgical pain.

Persistent symptoms, most commonly pain, may remain after otherwise successful hip replacement surgery. Innervation of fascia and soft tissues has become increasingly important in etiopathogenesis of pain, but the relative importance of the various anatomical structures in the hip region is still not known. Innervation of skin, superficial adipose tissue, superficial fascia, deep adipose tissue, deep fascia, muscles, capsule, capsule ligament, ligamentum teres and tendon in the human hip from 11 patients and 2 cadavers were quantified by staining with anti-S100 antibody for myelin-forming Schwann cells, to obtain the percentage of antibody positivity, density and mean diameter of the nerve fibers. The skin was the most highly innervated (0.73±0.37% of positive area in patients; 0.80±0.28% in cadavers); the tendon was the least innervated (0.07±0.01% in patients, 0.07±0.007% in cadavers). The muscles (vasto-lateral and gluteus medius) were the second most innervated structure according the percentage (0.31±0.13% in living humans, 0.30±0.07% in cadavers), but with only a few nerves, with large diameters (mean diameter 36.4±13.4µm). Instead, the fasciae showed 0.22±0.06% and 0.26±0.05% of positive areas in living humans and cadavers, respectively; they were also invaded by networks of small nerve fibers, revealing a possible role in pain. The superficial fascia was the second most highly innervated tissue after the skin, with a density of 33±2.5/cm , and a mean nerve sizes of 19.1±7.2µm. Lastly, the capsule turned out to be poorly innervated (0.09%), showing that its removal does not necessarily lead to painful consequences. This article is protected by copyright. Subjective and Objective Characteristics of Patients Seen at a Psychodermatology Unit: One-year Experience in Malmö, Sweden.

Clinical epidemiological knowledge concerning psychodermatology patients is scarce. The objective of this study was to assess morbidity in a new psychodermatology service. Information was gathered from patient records at the psychodermatology unit in Skåne University Hospital, Malmö, Sweden, from 1 February 2017 to 31 January 2018. All patients were screened with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) at baseline and after 12 months. Additional information was collated from the patient records. A total of 50 patients were treated during the 12 months, 86% were women, mean age 44 years (standard deviation (SD) 16 years). Itch was present in 72% of patients. Forty-two percent of patients were diagnosed with mood disorders, 30% with personality disorders, and 16% with delusional disorders. At baseline 40% of patients had a DLQI score >11, clinical depression was present in 14%, and clinical anxiety in 28%. These data emphasize the need for access to a multidisciplinary unit [AQ1].

A Bibliometric Analysis Using CiteSpace of Publications from 1999 to 2018 on Patient Rehabilitation After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND Following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), postoperative patient rehabilitation is important to achieve the optimal level of knee function and mobility. Clinical research in this field is growing, and bibliometric analysis of publication may provide direction for research clinicians and raise awareness of research trends, journal selection, and key topics. Therefore, this bibliometric study aimed to analyze the current status and trends during the past two decades, between 1999 and 2018, of publications on rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and used CiteSpace. MATERIAL AND METHODS The global literature was searched between 2018 to 2019 for publications related to rehabilitation after TKA. Publication data were identified using relevant search terms and the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace (5.3.R11) software was used to analyze the journals, authors, institutions, countries, cited references, and keywords using standard bibliometric indicators. RESULTS A total of 1,292 publications were retrieved between 1999 to 2018, and the most active journals, countries, authors, and institutions in the field of TKA rehabilitation were identified. Key areas of research included postoperative analgesia, muscle inhibition, range of motion, inhibitors, knee flexion, pain control, self-reporting, spectral analysis, in vivo forces, and rotator cuff repair. The emerging research topics included epidural analgesia, physiotherapy, postoperative analgesia, recovery, and the use of ropivacaine local analgesia. CONCLUSIONS The findings from this bibliometric study provided insight into trends in clinical research publications in the field of rehabilitation following TKA for the past 20 years, including global trends in emerging areas of research.
