The formulae and biologically active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicines for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common relapsing inflammatory skin disease characterized by severe pruritus that seriously affects the quality of patients' life. There is an increasingly large amount of research demonstrating that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) including herbal formulae and bioactive ingredients exerts pharmacological effects on atopic dermatitis. It has been a long history of TCM being used to treat atopic dermatitis, especially in preventing disease recurrence, maintaining long-term remission, and reducing disease burden. Nowadays, both of TCM monomer preparations and traditional formulae are still widely used. This review focuses on TCM as well as its bioactive ingredients for the treatment of AD, from the perspectives of animal model construction, pharmacodynamic mechanisms and clinical studies of formulae. To be more specific, the regulation and molecular mechanisms of the herbal formulae and bioactive ingredients of TCM are investigated, and the latest clinical research on TCM formulae is discussed. Furthermore, it provides a summary of the strengths and utilities of TCM, and will be useful for doctors who use Chinese medicine for treatment or researchers who select candidates for clinical treatments or further high-quality clinical studies.

Multiple sclerosing pneumocytomas: a review.

Sclerosing pneumocytoma (SP) is a rare benign low-grade tumour of the lung, and typically presents as single discrete coin lesions on imaging. Multiple SP is an exceedingly rare entity and thus reported sparingly. We review the literature on multiple SP, their clinical presentations, histopathology, relevant differential diagnoses and molecular histogenesis of this entity. SP has a predilection for East Asian origin females who have never smoked. Patients are either asymptomatic or have symptoms such as cough, haemoptysis that may be persistent, chest pain if involving the pleura and presents as discrete coin lesion on chest X-ray. Histologically, they are papillary, solid, angiomatoid or sclerotic, or combinations of these four basic patterns. Multiple lesions have the same or slightly different histological patterns. They can be distributed in either lung, in any lobe and can even be bilateral. molecular pathways are pivotal in their molecular pathogenesis. In this review, we further propose a classification based on five types of distribution of multiple SP.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a clinical disease which seriously affects the quality of life of sufferers. Although the pathogenesis of OA has not been fully unraveled, it is may be due to increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, activation of inflammation-related signaling pathways, and degradation of extracellular matrix. Osteoarthritis is characterized by chronic joint pain, swelling, stiffness, limited movement or joint deformity, all of which seriously affect the quality of life and health of the affected individuals. Myroside (Myr) is a polyphenolic hydroxyflavone glycoside extracted from the fruits, bark and leaves of myroside and other natural plants. It has many pharmacological properties, especially anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, primary chondrocytes of IL-1β rats were used to simulate pathological environment of chondrocytes in OA, and to explore the effect of Myr on chondrocytes. It was found that Myr improved the viability and proliferation of chondrocytes, and also inhibited apoptosis in these cells. Moreover, Myr reduced the expressions of inflammatory factors, and inhibited inflammatory reactions in chondrocytes. These findings provide good experimental basis for the clinical application of Myr in the prevention and treatment of progressive degeneration of cartilage in OA.

Supernumerary intrathoracic rib, a rare congenital anomaly: Case report and review of the literature.

A 17-year-old female who presented with cough, chest pain, dyspnea, and hemoptysis was found to have an intrathoracic rib. Patients who are diagnosed with intrathoracic ribs are most often asymptomatic and should undergo limited diagnostic workup. Intrathoracic ribs are rare congenital anomalies incidentally identified after chest radiography performed for another indication, as is the case with this patient. In this case, further evaluation was necessary due to persistent symptoms. Here, we used contrast-enhanced ultrasound after chest radiography and computed tomography to further evaluate the fatty intrathoracic mass and exclude vascular features suggestive of a tumor.

Effects of Red and Fermented Ginseng and Ginsenosides on Allergic Disorders.

Both white ginseng (WG, dried root of sp.) and red ginseng (RG, steamed and dried root of sp.) are reported to exhibit a variety of pharmacological effects such as anticancer, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective activities. These ginsengs contain hydrophilic sugar-conjugated ginsenosides and polysaccharides as the bioactive constituents. When taken orally, their hydrophilic constituents are metabolized into hydrophobic ginsenosides compound K, Rh1, and Rh2 that are absorbable into the blood. These metabolites exhibit the pharmacological effects more strongly than hydrophilic parental constituents. To enforce these metabolites, fermented WG and RG are developed. Moreover, natural products including ginseng are frequently used for the treatment of allergic disorders. Therefore, this review introduces the current knowledge related to the effectiveness of ginseng on allergic disorders including asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and pruritus. We discuss how ginseng, its constituents, and its metabolites regulate allergy-related immune responses. We also describe how ginseng controls allergic disorders.
