Health and suffering are associated with social support: a cross-sectional study of women and mothers with exhaustion and pain.

Despite women are generally overrepresented in behavioral, mental, and musculoskeletal disorders, motherhood as a central part of women's life is poorly understood in relation to exhaustion and long-lasting pain. Mothers' health impairments imply suffering both for herself and her family. A profound understanding of health is needed taking mothers' subjective health experience, their suffering and life situation into account to give women, their families and society better prerequisites to alleviate exhaustion and long-lasting pain. The aim of the study was to describe health and suffering of women and mothers undergoing rehabilitation for long-lasting pain and exhaustion and its correlation with perceived social support.

Daphnetin inhibits spinal glial activation via Nrf2/HO-1/NF-κB signaling pathway and attenuates CFA-induced inflammatory pain.

Daphnetin (7, 8-dihydroxycoumarin, DAPH), a coumarin derivative isolated from Daphne odora var., recently draws much more attention as a promising drug candidate to treat neuroinflammatory diseases due to its protective effects against neuroinflammation. However, itscontribution to chronic inflammatory pain is largely unknown. In the current work, we investigated the effects of DAPH in a murine model of inflammatory pain induced by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) and its possible underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that DAPH treatment significantly attenuated mechanical allodynia provoked by CFA. A profound inhibition of spinal glial activation, followed by attenuated expression levels of spinal pro-inflammatory cytokines, was observed in DAPH-treated inflammatory pain mice. Further study demonstrated that DAPH mediated negative regulation of spinal NF-κB pathway, as well as its preferential activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway in inflammatory pain mice. This study, for the first time, indicated that DAPH might preventthe development of mechanical allodynia in mice with inflammatory pain. And more importantly, these data provide evidence for the potential application of DAPH in the treatment of chronic inflammatory pain.

[Current advances in research of semaphorin 3A:a potential target for the treatment of nospecific low back pain].

Nonspecific low back pain is closely associated with afferent nerve ingrowth into degenerated IVDs and increasing the inflammatory response. Members of the class 3 semaphorins signal their response through two prominent receptors; the NRP (Neuropilin-1) and the Plexin A. Sema3A (Semaphorin3A) is primarily known for their role in modulating neuronal survival as well as neurite outgrowth and guidance via regulation of Sema3A-NRP-1-plexinA signal pathway. Also, sema3A is shown to be conductive to innervate the inner painful degenerated IVDs (Intervertebral discs). Furthermore, sema3A is thought to act as a barrier to endothelial cells survival and migration on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and inhibition of KLF5-induced (Krüppel-like factor 5) inflammatory mediators within degenerated IVDs. Therefore, Sema3A produce a new perspective of dual-action therapeutic agent for attenuating the regulator of innervation and angiogenesis into degenerated IVDs and inhibition of KLF5-induced inflammation.

Standardized Patient Education for Decompensated Cirrhotic Patients and Impact on Clinician Satisfaction.

The development of ascites in patients with cirrhosis can cause numerous complications including abdominal discomfort, pain, respiratory distress, decreased mobility, diminished quality of life, and contributes to an increased mortality. Symptom self-monitoring that incorporates evidence-based treatments has been effective when used by patients with noncirrhotic chronic diseases. Guided by the theory of Self-Care of Chronic Illness, a self-monitoring guide was adapted from an existing validated tool. In the context of a pilot quality initiative, staff nurses educated patients with ascites and their caregivers, with the adapted symptom self-monitoring guide using a standardized process. Clinicians were surveyed regarding their satisfaction with the patient education pre- and post-implementation. Results indicated improved clinician satisfaction with the education provided to patients and their caregivers during the clinic visit. Implementation of self-monitoring may improve clinician and patient satisfaction and clinic workflows. Additional evaluation of the self-monitoring guide and its effect on patient satisfaction, impact on hospital admissions, and outpatient paracentesis is warranted.
