I have spent my career as a pain researcher in academia and government. The mission of my research program is to understand the brain’s role in perceiving, modifying, and managing pain, with a special emphasis on mind/body modalities of pain control. My research includes clinical studies of non-pharmacological analgesic treatments in chronic pain patients and rodent studies addressing how environmental factors affect pain processing. Beyond my own research, I have served the pain community as President, Canadian Pain Society (2011-2012), Councilor, Society for Neuroscience (2012-2016), Director, McGill University Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain (2003-2009) and multiple IASP positions.
