Health Care Workers (HCWs) use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect themselves and prevent the transmission of the disease. The use of PPE, especially respiratory masks, has adverse consequences, including headaches, which have been secondary and unusual. The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis study was to investigate the prevalence of PPE-associated headaches in HCWs during COVID-19 pandemic.

Bladder Paraganglioma Presenting as Post-Micturition Syncope.

A 22-year-old woman presented with a 12-year history of intensifying paroxysms of anxiety, palpitations and recurrent syncope following micturition. The patient was referred to endocrinology upon discovery of hypertension. An extended family history revealed metastatic phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma in two grand-uncles. Clinical examination revealed hypertension, with a mean 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure of 150/100 mmHg. Supine plasma normetanephrines were markedly elevated with a raised 3-methoxytyramine, while plasma metanephrines were normal. Computed tomography identified a 4.4 cm mass at the right inferolateral margin of the bladder wall. Scintigraphic imaging confirmed unifocal bladder lesion uptake with no additional metastatic lesions. Following pre-operative alpha blockade, the patient underwent a partial cystectomy. Histology confirmed a paraganglioma, and SDHB staining was lost in neoplastic cells consistent with an SDHB-related paraganglioma. Plasma normetanephrine, 3-methoxytyramine and blood pressure returned to normal postoperatively. Genetic screening identified a germline heterozygous SDHB gene variant c.723C>G. Bladder paragangliomas are a rare but important differential to consider when investigating post-micturition syncope. An extended family history should be sought and suspicion for a genetic cause should be raised, especially when the condition presents at a young age. This is the first reported case describing phaeochromocytoma or paraganglioma with the SDHB gene variant c.723C>G.

Five immune-related genes as diagnostic markers for endometriosis and their correlation with immune infiltration.

Endometriosis (EMS) is a chronic disease that can cause dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility, among other symptoms. EMS diagnosis is often delayed compared to other chronic diseases, and there are currently no accurate, easily accessible, and non-invasive diagnostic tools. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the mechanism of EMS and explore potential biomarkers and diagnostic tools for its accurate diagnosis and treatment. In the present study, we comprehensively analyzed the differential expression, immune infiltration, and interactions of EMS-related genes in three datasets. Our results identified 332 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with EMS. Gene ontology analysis showed that these changes mainly focused on the positive regulation of endometrial cell proliferation, cell metabolism, and extracellular space, and EMS involved the integrin, complement activation, folic acid metabolism, interleukin, and lipid signaling pathways. The LASSO regression model was established using immune DEGs with an area under the curve of 0.783 for the internal dataset and 0.656 for the external dataset. Five genes with diagnostic value, , , , , and , were screened from M1 and M2 macrophages, activated mast cells, neutrophils, natural killer cells, follicular T helper cells, CD8, and CD4 cells. A protein-protein interaction network based on the immune DEGs was constructed, and ten hub genes with the highest scores were identified. Our results may provide a framework for the development of pathological molecular networks in EMS.

Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Mimicking a Brain Tumor on Methionine-positron Emission Tomography: A Case Report.

In this article, we report a case wherein a brain tumor was suspected based on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings. We made an initial diagnosis of malignant brain tumor based on methionine-positron emission tomography (PET) findings, but the correct diagnosis was dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF). The patient was a 45-year-old man with DAVF who developed headache. Methionine-PET imaging showed high methionine uptake in the lesion. Although the tumor was strongly suspected from the findings of methionine-PET, the diagnosis of DAVF could be made correctly only by interpreting digital subtraction angiography and computed tomographic angiography. The findings of methionine-PET, which is considered useful in the diagnosis and denial of brain tumors, made the diagnosis of DAVF more difficult. The increased uptake of methionine-PET in DAVF is an important finding because, to our knowledge, this study is the first to report such finding. The results of this study might be useful for differential diagnoses when the diagnosis is uncertain.

‘Invisible actors’-How poor methodology reporting compromises mouse models of oncology: A cross-sectional survey.

The laboratory mouse is a key player in preclinical oncology research. However, emphasis of techniques reporting at the expense of critical animal-related detail compromises research integrity, animal welfare, and, ultimately, the translation potential of mouse-based oncology models. To evaluate current reporting practices, we performed a cross-sectional survey of 400 preclinical oncology studies using mouse solid-tumour models. Articles published in 2020 were selected from 20 journals that specifically endorsed the ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) preclinical reporting guidelines. We assessed reporting compliance for 22 items in five domains: ethical oversight assurance, animal signalment, husbandry, welfare, and euthanasia. Data were analysed using hierarchical generalised random-intercept models, clustered on journal. Overall, reporting of animal-related items was poor. Median compliance over all categories was 23%. There was little or no association between extent of reporting compliance and journal or journal impact factor. Age, sex, and source were reported most frequently, but verifiable strain information was reported for <10% of studies. Animal husbandry, housing environment, and welfare items were reported by <5% of studies. Fewer than one in four studies reported analgesia use, humane endpoints, or an identifiable method of euthanasia. Of concern was the poor documentation of ethical oversight information. Fewer than one in four provided verifiable approval information, and almost one in ten reported no information, or information that was demonstrably false. Mice are the "invisible actors" in preclinical oncology research. In spite of widespread endorsement of reporting guidelines, adherence to reporting guidelines on the part of authors is poor and journals fail to enforce guideline reporting standards. In particular, the inadequate reporting of key animal-related items severely restricts the utility and translation potential of mouse models, and results in research waste. Both investigators and journals have the ethical responsibility to ensure animals are not wasted in uninformative research.
