Manual development for a multi-modal, dyadic intervention for persistent pain: A Qualitative Study.

People who experience persistent pain often require help from a family member, partner, or friend. These caregivers frequently have pain but are often not included in interventions. Caregivers and care receivers who both experience pain are more likely to be socially isolated, and experience communication conflict and decreased quality of life. Interventions should target caregiving dyads to help them manage their pain together. However, there are few intervention manuals or research protocols developed to support the dyad.

Feeling the music: The feel and sound of songs attenuate pain.

Extensive research has demonstrated that music and touch can separately attenuate perceived pain intensity. However, little research has investigated how auditory and tactile stimulation can synergistically enhance pain attenuation by music. In the current study, we investigated whether tactile stimulation can enhance music-induced analgesia for noxious force stimulation on the fingertip.

Are group identity and sense of belonging relevant for group pain management programmes? An exploratory pilot study.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)-based programmes for chronic pain are often conducted in groups, most likely for time and cost efficiencies. However, there has been very little investigation of the role that the group itself, and particularly the processes occurring within the group, may play in individual outcomes. The objective of this study was to explore whether social group processes were relevant to key treatment outcomes of group CBT for chronic pain.

Health-Related Quality of Life in Women With Breast Cancer Undergoing Treatment With Hormonal Therapy – A Review Study.

This review aimed to analyze the significance and impact of health-related quality of life (QoL) in women with breast cancer undergoing treatment with hormonal therapy. This study developed a comprehensive, structured, systematic search strategy to identify literature related to health and QoL in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment with hormonal therapy. The search was conducted for published literature indexed in PubMed (Medline), Cancer Lit, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Web of Science between 2010 and 2020. Patients associated with the study of QoL reported some difficulties in terms of depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, sleep problems, pain, sexual dysfunction and sleep disorders. Endocrine-related symptoms did not fluctuate between interventions and remained unchanged in all groups. The evaluation of FACT-G scores (physical well-being subscale) showed statistically significant differences among participants receiving anastrozole versus tamoxifen and exemestane. It can be concluded that the QoL of postmenopausal women with breast cancer is affected by the long-term use of adjuvant endocrine therapy, with difference reported associated with the different therapies. However, further efforts are required to improve QoL instruments and the quantitative evaluation of QoL data for patients receiving adjuvant ET.

Neuropathic pain in athletes: basics of diagnosis and monitoring of a hidden threat.

The aim was to increase awareness about neuropathic pain in athletes and the available diagnostic criteria and explore the relevance to athletes and sports. In the report of its consensus meeting of 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) noted the critical need to raise the awareness about pain and its management amongst sports physicians. The adequate management of pain requires recognition of its type and pathophysiological mechanisms. This is paramount in applying the multi-modal management of pain as a symptom or approach it as a disease. In athletes, the assessment of pain in general, and of neuropathic pain in particular, is more complex due to the impact of physiological, psychological and motivational factors and specific pathophysiological mechanisms on the pain threshold and tolerance. Neuropathic pain is not uncommon to encounter in athletes although not always recognised. Examples of neuropathic pain as a disease include complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), peripheral neuropathy and spinal cord injuries. The recognition and diagnosis of neuropathic pain could be facilitated by the application of screening tools such as DN4 (Douleur Neuropathique 4) and LANSS (Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs). Sports injuries may lead to neuropathic pain through different pathologies and mechanisms. Thus, neuropathic pain could be a real threat to athletes' career if not promptly recognised and treated. We therefore believe that early recognition and expert management are mandatory for the best outcome.

S2k Leitlinie: Diagnostik und Therapie des chronischen Pruritus.

S2k guideline: Diagnosis and treatment of chronic pruritus.

Pruritus is a cross-disciplinary leading symptom of numerous diseases and represents an interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. In contrast to acute pruritus, chronic pruritus (CP) is a symptom of various diseases that is usually difficult to treat. Scratching and the development of scratch-associated skin lesions can alter the original skin status. In the presence of an itch-scratch-cycle, even secondary diseases such as chronic prurigo can develop. Chronic pruritus leads to considerable subjective suffering of those affected, which can result in restrictions on the health-related quality of life such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, depressiveness, experience of stigmatization and/or social withdrawal up to clinically relevant psychic comorbidities. Medical care of patients should therefore include (a) interdisciplinary diagnosis and therapy of the triggering underlying disease, (b) therapy of the secondary symptoms of pruritus (dermatological therapy, sleep promotion, in the case of an accompanying or underlying psychological or psychosomatic disease an appropriate psychological-psychotherapeutic treatment) and (c) symptomatic antipruritic therapy. The aim of this interdisciplinary guideline is to define and standardize the therapeutic procedure as well as the interdisciplinary diagnosis of CP. This is the short version of the updated S2k-guideline for chronic pruritus. The long version can be found at www.awmf.org.

Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability Treated With Tendon Allografting: A Preliminary Comparison of Arthroscopic and Open Anatomic Ligament Reconstruction.

Roughly 30% of patients with chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) have long-lasting painful instability requiring surgical intervention. Ligament reconstruction with the traditional open method and using tendon allografts can provide sufficient mechanical stability for severe CLAI. Arthroscopic ligament reconstruction with tendon allograft has recently been introduced to treat CLAI.

Trends in Practice Among Shoulder Specialists in the Management of Frozen Shoulder: A Consensus Survey.

The management of frozen shoulder (FS) differs depending on experience level and variation between scientific guidelines and actual practice.

Responsiveness of the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale to Monitor Clinical Recovery After Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) is used to assess the number and intensity of symptoms after a concussion/mild traumatic brain injury. However, its responsiveness to monitor clinical recovery has yet to be determined.
