The 42nd National Congress of the Italian Association for the Study of Pain
More than 550 specialists from a variety of disciplines attended our 42nd National Congress, held 6 – 9 June 2019 in Rome. The wide array of participants ranging from healthcare professionals to nurses, to physiotherapists specializing in disciplines from Internal Medicine to Anesthesiology, from Rheumatology to Neurology, from Physiology to Orthopedics and everything in between providing a wealth of knowledge and a free following exchange of ideas.
The success of this Congress is an encouraging result that confirms the growing interest in the work of our scientific society and in the broader Pain Medicine field.
The scientific program
The main themes of the scientific program were "pain in neuroinflammatory, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases, acute and chronic pain, osteoarthritic and postoperative pain"; with particular attention paid to pain in the elderly, children, fragile patients, as well as fragility and clinical and social vulnerability. The program additionally explored innovations and the consolidated evidence of drug efficacy, bioethics, and interventional and intra-articular therapy.
A Special Focus: Chronic pain: a private matter? The perspective of public ethics
This was the title of the Lectio magistralis at the opening ceremony, given by prof. Sebastiano Maffettone, Professor of Political Philosophy, LUISS "Guido Carli" University. This opening ceremony was hosted in the beautiful Villa Blanc, LUISS University headquarters, a true testimony to the increased interest from the non-medical community on the socio-economic impact of the pain.
