Deadline Is May 9 for John J. Bonica Trainee Fellowship
Apr 11, 2018
Less than a month remains to apply for the 2018 IASP John J. Bonica Trainee Fellowship, worth up to US$100,000. Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, May 9, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time.
The multidisciplinary fellowship, created in 1998 to honor the IASP founder, supports an outstanding pain trainee who seeks mentoring. The two-year program provides up to US$50,000 annually. The fellowship may not be used to supplement or extend current training.
Past recipients have urged others to apply, citing its profound effect on their lives and careers. “Without a doubt, receiving the 2015 John J. Bonica Trainee Fellowship had a great impact on my career path by helping me join one of the greatest pediatric pain labs in Canada,” says Somayyeh Mohammadi, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Colombia. “Every ambitious trainee who is interested in pain research and would like to work with the most reputable pain researchers in the world should apply for this fellowship to guarantee an amazing future in pain research.”
Such professional growth among trainees reflects much of the career focus of Dr. Bonica, who assisted the rise of countless pain scientists during his leadership of IASP. To date, IASP has invested more than one million dollars in the work of the outstanding trainees who have won this influential fellowship.
The IASP Fellowships, Grants, and Awards Working Group will evaluate all submissions on the following criteria:
- The qualifications of the applicant and mentor
- The usefulness of the training to the applicant’s research career
- The quality of the research proposal—the importance of the problem, the feasibility and potential impact of the proposed research, and the extent to which it will provide a valuable training vehicle for the applicant
The committee also will prefer candidates who seek training outside of their current institution. Careful adherence to these guidelines will increase the chance of success. Please send any questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
