IASP Pain in Older Persons SIG Call for Contribution:
Article on Best Practices in Experimental Pain Research in Older People

Experimental pain research in ageing has a long history. However, due to variations in pain protocols, assessment methods and selection of age-ranges, drawing definitive conclusions remains challenging.

To advance the field of pain research in older adults, the Pain in Older Persons SIG seeks to write an article that gives recommendations on best practices in conducting experimental pain research in aging.

The Pain in Older Persons SIG is looking for researchers with expertise in the following areas:

  • Psychophysical, electrophysiological, brain imaging, behavioral, or other pain assessment methods
  • Experimental pain protocols (e.g. thresholds, summation, conditioned pain modulation)
  • Focus on aging/older population

The Pain in Older Persons SIG especially encourages participation from experts across diverse disciplines—including medicine, gerontology/geriatrics, psychology, sociology, nursing science, biology, and related fields—to ensure a wide range of perspectives.

The Pain in Older Pserons SIG will produce the article through two steps:

  1. A short survey will be conducted among pain researchers to collect info on current practices in experimental pain research in aging.
  2. An expert meeting will follow, during which we will review the survey results, relevant literature, and expert opinions to develop a set of best practice recommendations.

If you are interested in contributing or would like more information, please contact Prof. Dr. Miriam Kunz.
