I encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, especially that between scientists and clinicians, and to promote the global relevance of IASP for members outside the North American/European regions, particularly those in low/medium-resourced settings

Professional Background

I am a clinical academic active in both clinical practice and research elucidating neuropathic pain in the context of infectious diseases (HIV, Herpes Zoster and leprosy), diabetic neuropathy and peripheral nerve trauma. My research focuses on neuropathic pain and covers both laboratory and clinical research spanning from animal models, through deep profiling of patients with a view to personalised medicine, to clinical trials and evidence synthesis. Clinically, I work as a senior member of a large multi-disciplinary team offering a spectrum of services from psychological to interventional. My research is translational, including laboratory and clinical programmes. Advocate of collaborative multi-disciplinary research, participating in several consortia; including Administrative Director London Pain Consortium and workpackage leader EUROPAIN. Track-record of proactive engagement with IASP/NeuPSIG members in India, SE Asia, Africa and Latin/South America for Pain Schools, joint conferences and collaborative research (e.g. leprosy & HIV).I am interested in improving the external and internal validity of animal models and the medical history of neuropathic pain, especially that arising from 20th century conflicts. I have been predominantly funded by the Wellcome Trust, NC3Rs, European Commission and NIHR. http://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/a.rice
