Professional Background
Upon completion of international training in Mexico City, the United States, and Europe, Dr. Ochoa returned to Colombia and started to work in the pain field in 1986, as a spine surgeon and pain specialist. In 1986 he and other pain specialists founded a Back School Clinic in Bogotá. Since that time he has been working on acute and chronic pain, with an emphasis on low back and neuropathic pain.

A founding member of the Colombian Association for the Study of Pain (ACED) in 1988, Dr. Ochoa served as ACED's President twice, during the terms 1993-1996 and 1998-1999. In 1992 he co-founded the Latin-American Federation of IASP Chapters (FEDELAT) and was President from 1999-2002. A publisher of numerous articles, chapters, and books on pain management, Dr. Ochoa coordinated the meeting of FEDELAT with the Ministers of Health from the Latin American Countries and members of the Community of Andean Nations in 2007 in an effort to improve pain treatment in Latin America.

Currently Dr. Ochoa is member of the working group "Bogotá – a City With No Pain" – a joint project between FEDELAT, ACED and the Bogotá Secretary of Health – with a goal of building up a solid policy for adequate treatment of patients with pain who live in the city. The group hopes this project will be a pilot not just for Colombia, but for all of Latin America.
