| Attitudes, Beliefs and Health Literacy Impact How Patients Manage Chronic Lower Back Pain
(Press Release) In a study published in the August issue of PAIN, a group of Australian researchers investigating the relevance of health literacy in patients with chronic lower back pain (CLBP) found that LBP-related beliefs and behaviors affect a person’s disability more than pain intensity or a standard measure of functional health literacy.

| IASP International Pain Summit
On September 3, 2010, IASP will hold the first International Pain Summit at the Palais des congrès de Montréal immediately following the 13th World Congress on Pain. The International Pain Summit in Montréal will be the first global meeting about the crucial aspects of pain management, with a focus on advocacy and assistance for all countries to develop national pain strategies.

"Fibromyalgia, Obesity, and Depression Linked"
Researchers have long well known that obese people often experience a high rate of pain problems. Recently, researchers from the American Pain Society published a study in their Journal of Pain in July that showed obesity and pain are also linked with family history and mood disorders, such as chronic depression.

Dr. Richard Sultan, a pediatric neurologist at Jersey Shore Neurology in Neptune, N.J., who diagnosed Hopkins in her sophomore year of college, described RSD – also known as CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) – as a malfunction of the immune system.

| "'Telecare' Improves Cancer-Related Pain and Depression"
Pain and depression were significantly improved in cancer patients who received telephone-based care management and home-based automated symptom monitoring, according to a study published in the July 14 issue of JAMA. [Link requires free registration.]

| "The mind may be the key to pain relief"
A number of studies suggest meditation can help people feel less pain. In one study, published in May in the journal Pain, people who had some experience with mindful meditation were subjected to bouts of pain. Those who had more experience with meditating showed less activity in certain parts of their brain as they anticipated pain.

Movement-based therapies such as yoga, tai chi, qigong and more mainstream forms of exercise are gaining acceptance in the world of chronic pain management. Many pain clinics and integrative medicine centers now offer movement-based therapy for pain caused by cancer and cancer treatments, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases and conditions.
