In an effort to keep IASP Press books affordable and to help streamline the book-buying process, we will be shifting our inventory to a new warehouse this week. Beginning Tuesday, July 20, you will be able to place orders through the IASP Press Bookstore, but your order will not be processed until the transition is complete on Monday, August 2. We apologize for this delay and appreciate your patience during this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Notes from the Secretariat

IASP Wait-Times Recommendations

It is established that patients suffering with chronic pain deteriorate while waiting for treatment. The IASP Task Force on Wait-Times has developed a set of recommendations specific for wait-times for treatment of chronic pain:

Most urgent (1 week): acute painful severe condition with risk of deterioration or chronicity (new CRPS) or pain related to cancer or terminal or end stage illness (acute herpes zoster also requires urgent treatment but ideally should be treated at the primary care level rather than requiring a pain specialist service)

Urgent or semi-urgent (1 month): severe undiagnosed or progressive pain and risk of increasing functional impairment generally 6 months duration or less (back pain not resolving, neuropathic pain, post surgical or post traumatic pain)

Routine or regular (4 months): persistent long-term pain without significant progression

Click here to read the full summary. IASP members will be asked to contribute their comments on these recommendations.

International Pain Summit Logo

First International Pain Summit

On September 3, 2010, IASP will hold the first International Pain Summit at the Palais des congrès de Montréal immediately following the 13th World Congress on Pain. Worldwide, there is increasing awareness of the human suffering, health care burden, and economic impact created by under-treated pain of all types, including acute pain, chronic pain, pain caused by health conditions such as cancer and HIV/AIDS, and pain caused by treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy.

The International Pain Summit in Montréal will be the first global meeting about the crucial aspects of pain management, with a focus on advocacy and assistance for all countries to develop national pain strategies.
