Albania Hosts Phantom Limb Pain Symposium

The Albanian Pain Association, in cooperation with the Albanian Health Ministry, the University of Tirana, and the Health Ministry of the German Federal Republic, organized an international scientific symposium on "The Underlying Mechanisms Behind Phantom Limb Pain" on July 2, 2010. Several IASP members spoke at the event, including Prof. Dr. Manfred Zimmerman (Germany) on the mysteries of phantom limb pain with a historical perspective; Lone Nikolajsen, MD, PhD (Denmark) on the characteristics and treatment approaches for phantom limb pain; and Candida McCabe, PhD, RGN (UK) on manipulating motor and sensory mechanisms for the relief of pain. Other speakers addressed civilian and war-related traumatic injury and amputation, use of CT scans in interventional procedures, ganglion spinalis-neural physiological aspects, and cortical reorganization due to amputation. More than 450 participants attended this well-received symposium.
